PAST EVENT INFO!

WDS Holiday Gathering + Service

Tuesday, December 19th at lunch in room 207/208 and 204/205. Join us at lunch for free hot chocolate, coffee, and tea while we put the finishing touches on a few holiday projects hosted by WDS. Some folks can gather in 207/208 and make some fleece blankets with kits donated by WDS parents; others can come to 204/205 to assemble cold weather hygiene bags. Residents of Covenant House in Anchorage and beneficiaries of the CHS Food Pantry will receive these items to prepare for the holiday break.
Students can also help inventory and wrap gifts and donations for the “Christmas Family” adopted by WDS. Gifts will be delivered via Nurse Amy after school on Tuesday.

WDS Day of Caring 2023 Info

Day of Caring will be an all-day event on Tuesday, April 25th. Students will have permission slips to miss their non-WDS classes that they need to have signed by Monday, April 24th.
We will seminar on the ethics of philanthropy in the morning and start our service events after lunch. We have a variety of awesome events for students to choose from and we need your help! Please review our Signup Genius here and consider donating an item or two to help make this day happen!

Sign up to donate items here!

Starting April 18th, we are also hosting several asynchronous events:
Penny Wars in room 204/205: Each class will have a jar to fill with pennies. Each penny is 1 point for that class. The twist is that you can put nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollars in the other classes’ jars to sabotage them. Each silver coin or dollar counts as 1 point less per cent (for example a nickle is minus 5 points). The winner is still usually in negative points, but the real winner is this year’s Penny War benefactor, Bethel Friends of Canines! Please send your kid to school with any spare change you may have around the house so they can participate. WDS Council members will be counting the coins during 6th hour on Monday, April 24 and the winner will be announced at the start of day of caring on Tuesday.

Social Media Fasts: This is an OPTIONAL event where students who use social media can choose to not post any personal content on the social media platform of their choice for one week (April 18-24th) and instead use that platform to share information on a cause they care about throughout the week. Students in English II and IV will have time in class the week prior to create the content. All students in those classes will create the content for a grade, but it is totally optional to particpate in the fast and totally optional to post the content they create anywhere.

Book Drive: Covenant House and Title Wave Books have a partnership in which you can give your used book sale credit to Covenant House for them to purchase educational texts and other reference texts for the teens who live at Covenant House. We are collecting new or nearly new books you may have in your home (any genre) and will deliver them to Title Wave on April 25th after school. Title Wave will identify which books they can provide a credit for and give that credit to Covenant House. All other books will be donated appropriately by Title Wave to their other partners. For more info check this link out. You can sign up to contribute a box of books from your house at the SignUp Genius link.

Covenant House Drive: Bring any items on this list to the school by April 25th and we can deliver your donations to Covenant House. Unused gift cards you keep forgetting to use are the #1 request! You can let us know you plan to send something by signing up on the SignUp Genius link.

Mustang Food Pantry + Closet Drive: Bring any items listed below on or before April 25th and we will organize them into the food pantry at the school. Any items that we have too much of will be redistributed to the Chugiak-Eagle River Food Pantry.

Cup of Noodles

Bonus Event!
OCS Visitation Rooms Cleaning: After Day of Caring on April 25th, a handful of students will have the option to travel to Anchorage and clean four of the visitation rooms at the Office of Children’s Services. Students will be transported in teachers’ cars with permission slips. The visitation rooms are used for parents and children who are currently in OCS care to have supervised visits. These rooms are essential to the healing and growth process for children and parents and could use some extra love. Our team will be deep cleaning the rooms and replenishing some of the old puzzles, board games, and DVDs.

If your child would like to volunteer to clean, have them let Ms. Handeland know ASAP. If you’d like to donate new and gently used puzzles, board games, and DVDs, please send them to school by April 25th. You can sign up at the SignUp Genius link above. If you’re willing to loan a box of cleaning supplies and/or a handheld vaccum, please also sign up at the link above. Your items will be returned to your children in class on Wednesday, April 26th.

WDS Graduation

Wednesday, May 3rd, 2023 // Chugiak High Library

This event is for current WDS Seniors and their families. Other WDS students are welcome, but not expected to attend. We will have a potluck starting at 6pm. Please bring your favorite dish to share. Drinks/cups/plates/utensils/tableware will be provided by WDS teachers. The ceremony will start at 6:30. This is our first evening graduation ceremony since 2019, but we will follow the old format, which includes an open mic portion, so students are encouraged to have memories to share. We plan to be done by 8:00 pm. All 12th grade students who are currently in a WDS class will be honored at this ceremony.

WDS Good Bye Breakfast

Thursday, May 4th, 2023 // Student Union // 1st Hour

This is a new event this year. We had our WDS graduations during the school day in 2021 and 2022 and the underclassmen liked being a part of it, so this will be a happy medium for that. Seniors will wear their crazy hats and be honored again in front of the other WDS students, and we will share memories of the year across all grades. A potluck breakfast will be part of this, provided by 9-11th graders (since senior parents will have just contributed to a potluck the night before).
